Slack's MCP Client: What It Is and How It Works
Slack launched Model Context Protocol support in 2026 — here's what that means for teams using AI in their workflows.
What is the Slack MCP client?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard created by Anthropic that lets AI systems connect to external tools and data sources. Rather than building custom integrations for every app, MCP creates a shared interface so AI can interact with any MCP-compatible tool.
Slack implemented MCP in 2026, turning Slackbot into an MCP client. This means any app that exposes an MCP server can be queried or controlled through natural language in Slackbot — no new interface to learn. You type "What's my campaign reply rate this week?" into Slackbot, and the right app handles it.
For official details, see Slack's official MCP developer docs and Slack's MCP launch announcement.
Terminology clarified
- Slack's Slackbot is the MCP client — it connects to external apps.
- External apps like Skyp, Linear, and Amplitude run MCP servers that Slackbot connects to.
- "Slack MCP server" in search queries usually means which apps have MCP servers that connect to Slack — not a server run by Slack itself.

How to connect an MCP app to Slack
Connecting an MCP app takes a few steps in Slackbot. Once connected, you interact with the app entirely through natural language — no switching tabs or learning new commands.
Open Slackbot DM
Start a direct message with Slackbot in your workspace.
Browse or search for apps
Ask Slackbot "What apps are available?" or visit the Slack MCP Marketplace to find apps that support MCP.
Connect the app
Follow the OAuth flow to authorize the app's MCP server. Each app controls what data Slackbot can access.
Start using natural language
Once connected, you can query the app through Slackbot. "Show me last week's top campaigns" or "Create a Linear issue for the auth bug" — each goes to the right app automatically.
Note: MCP support in Slack requires a paid Slack plan (Pro, Business+, or Enterprise Grid). Check your plan at slack.com.
Where Skyp fits in the Slack MCP ecosystem
Skyp is listed in Slack's MCP marketplace as a sales and outreach agent. Via Slackbot, sales teams can ask about campaign performance, manage contacts, and get notified when leads reply or meetings get booked — all in natural language without leaving Slack.
Importantly, Skyp is not "the Slack MCP server" — Slack is the MCP client; Skyp's MCP server is what connects Skyp's outreach capabilities to Slackbot.
Skyp also runs its own dedicated email outreach MCP server (separate from the Slack integration), which lets AI tools like Claude and Cursor manage campaigns programmatically. See Skyp's email MCP server →
What you can do with Skyp via Slackbot
- Check campaign reply rates and open rates
- Pause, resume, or finalize email campaigns
- Review contacts and campaign threads
- Get real-time notifications when leads reply or book meetings
- Manage LinkedIn campaigns and check lead status
